Setting a reasonable board figure?

Col's picture

My son had a chat with me tonight about his GF moving in. She has been sharing a place with her sister but they have been advised that when the lease expires in 2 weeks that the rent will go up by about 50%. GF's sister has already decided to move out and even if another co-tenant could be found  the new rent will be too high.

I know what GF is paying net now which is similar to the shared room rate for a single in a similar house in this suburb. But of course it won't be single occupancy here and she is unlikely to get rent assistance (she is receiving a youth allowance as her parents live in a country town and she is going to uni in Perth). On the upside having GF move in here means that I will see more of DS, his dog and cat will be much happier and food that is bought may actually be eaten.

But I'm struggling a bit on deciding how much board to charge. GF won't move in if I don't charge something but I'm also aware that this house is a lot lot further away from uni and her (part-time) work so definitely increased petrol for them.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what is a reasonable board amount to charge for two uni students?

In the end I decided to ask for $100. I know DS was hoping I'd give them a set figure each but I stuck to my guns and gave the total amount. Talked to them later and they still hadn't agreed on a splitbut hopefully this will be sorted out before GF moves in. This won't be for another month as current landlord has agreed to a one month extension. This gives us time to rearrange things a bit so GF can fit in.

I think $100 to $120 for the GF is very reasonable especially in this eco climate! I was paying $50 to my parents 10 years ago when I lived in their granny flat but had to buy my own groceries and do all my own washing etc. My parents ended up putting that money into a savings account which ended up helping to pay for my wedding! Maybe the board from the GF may come in handy one day?? You never know!

Thanks. I was sort of thinking around maybe telling them $120 and let them argue about who is paying how much. Phone costs are likely to be lowish as DS, GF and her mum are with the same mobile carrier (free calls and free sms). Electricity, gas and water are likely to go up.

GF is talking about getting a storage unit for the furniture etc but with some reorganisation we should fit a fair amount in here and the fridge may actually be useful as mine is fairly small. Biggest problems might be where to store a washing machine and that they will need to get a lockable cabinet to keep her Care Bear collection safe from the thieving, teddy bear chewing dog.

I think because its family then its best just to work out the extra food cost and electritity, water, phone ect. i used to give mum and dad $100 a week when i moved back home for a little while
